Experience a unique family adventure at Faxe Kalkbrud, one of South Zealand’s most fascinating natural attractions. This enormous limestone quarry, formed around 63 million years ago, was once a deep-sea coral reef teeming with marine life, including giant sharks, crocodiles, and exotic sea creatures. Today, it offers visitors the chance to step back in time and uncover prehistoric fossils embedded in the chalk walls.

Faxe Kalkbrud is ideal for outdoor lovers and families interested in nature and history. Visitors can explore the quarry independently or join guided fossil hunts led by knowledgeable experts from the nearby Geomuseum Faxe. These tours offer a hands-on experience, providing hammers and chisels to search for shark teeth, coral fragments, mussels, and belemnites. The best part? You are welcome to take your finds home, making your discovery even more memorable.

The quarry can be quite sunny and warm, so bringing sunglasses, sun protection, plenty of water, and sturdy shoes is recommended. The guided tours typically cover 2 to 2.5 kilometers across varied terrain, so comfortable outdoor clothing is advised. Keep in mind that pets are not allowed on fossil hunts, and for safety reasons, motorized vehicles are prohibited in the area.

After exploring the fossil-rich site, take time to visit Prismet, the stunning viewpoint shaped like a prism, which offers a breathtaking panorama of the quarry’s striking white walls, turquoise lakes, and surrounding landscape.
