Vordingborg Castle Grounds showcase historic ruins, stunning waterfront views, and remnants of one of Denmark’s most significant medieval castles. Located in the heart of Vordingborg, this ancient castle area provides a scenic and historic spot perfect for a leisurely walk. The site features the remains of a 710-meter-long and 8-meter-high ring wall that once encircled Denmark’s key castle in the 14th century. This castle was home to several kings, and significant events took place here, including the ratification of Denmark’s first constitution. It also served as the departure point for the Vendertogts under Bishop Absalon’s leadership, and was the gathering place for the Danish kingdom after years of division during Valdemar the Great’s reign (1157-1182).
Among the castle ruins stands the renowned Gåsetårn (Goose Tower), Vordingborg’s most iconic landmark and the best-preserved part of the castle. Built in the 1360s, it was one of nine towers of what was once Denmark’s largest royal castle. The golden goose atop the tower was placed there as a humorous jab at the German Hanseatic League, who were at war with King Valdemar Atterdag. The king mocked them by claiming to fear a flock of squawking geese more than the entire German Confederation.
